I bought this because I'm trying to read more lesbian fiction. Most of the time if you're asking or looking for queer book recs you find gay fiction before you find lesbian fiction. So I snatched this up when I found the entire series sitting up on the shelf in my Barnes & Noble.

I enjoyed it. It wasn't too strong of a start to a series, but it's also a romance and I feel like romance comic series usually do tend to start off slow, especially if it's not an insta-love kind of thing.

Pulse follows Mel, a surgeon who has blocked her heart off to love by rationalizing emotions as "just chemicals produced by your brain" and since your heart is a separate system working independent of your brain, then emotions are fake and are a weakness she will not indulge. Mel meets Lynn, a happy-go-lucky patient who is in need of a heart transplant who refuses to go through with the surgery despite already being on the waiting list. There is a lot of sex in this, which isn't a problem - it's one of the reasons I picked it up. But the sex is Mel's way of dealing with her loneliness, even though she doesn't really acknowledge that until after she meets Lynn.

I think this is a great start to a story about someone finding their way back to love (because obviously Mel has had her heart broken in the past - no one acts the way she does when it comes to love otherwise). I also think it's a great start to a story about how these two woman are going to impact each other's lives, and I'm excited to read the rest of the series to see where it's all going.
