0When I finally finished this author’s Chicago Stars series, I decided it was time to go back and read her other works. I always like starting from the beginning and this is the first book I could find that she had published. Although, it seems the original title back in the 80’s was Risen Glory. Being as it’s an historical romance I didn’t have to worry about weird technology references that no longer make sense, so that was an added bonus!
Before I get on with my review, I want to tell you to make sure to read the letter to the readers SEP includes at the beginning of this book. Although the letter was written in 2002, it is very timely and still makes so much sense. If you’re a fan of romance, you’ll appreciate what she has to say. If you’re not so sure about the genre, maybe her letter will help you understand why there are so many fans of romance.
I’m all for strong-willed heroines, but for a bit of time I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to like Kit. When it came to her personality and her grit, I loved the character. It was her beliefs about certain issues, her naivety when it came to the war, that gave me pause. Luckily, as she matured she also learned more about the world and how it really works.
Baron Cain on the other hand, I adored him from the start. He didn’t always make the best decisions, but contrary to what most thought of him, Baron was a very honorable man. Of course, due to the era, he also had some not-so-great ideas about women. Not to the extreme most men of his time would have, he wanted Kit to be able to do what she loved whether or not it was deemed “proper” by others. But he didn’t question that he should be in charge of her trust fund even though she was an adult. But again, that was the era so I had to make allowances for that.
I spent a huge part of this story with a pit of despair in my stomach. Kit and Baron are both so stubborn and so closed off to those around them I really didn’t know if they could ever open up to each other. The few small windows where they both let their guard down at the same time were just magical. Even when they weren’t speaking to each other their chemistry was off the charts.
