Ever since Linny’s older sister Grace ran away, she has been on an unending quest to figure out why and how someone can just pick up and leave. The stifling expectations of her doctor parents do not help to make her situation any better, and that is how she finds herself standing in front of Silver Springs, a senior living facility, for her first day of volunteering, staring at the presumed missing author and filmmaker Álvaro Herrera. Linny knows that if she can find out why Álvaro left, maybe she will be one step closer to figuring out why Grace left too.
Sebastian is gearing up to leave for college in the fall to study astrophysics. The biggest mystery in his life though is who is father is. This is what brings Sebastian to Linny’s hometown of Miami, as he gets ready to volunteer at Silver Springs where he believes his father is living. As Linny and Sebastian’s paths converge, each teen struggles to understand why people leave, and also what to do when the dust settles.
This is a wonderful read featuring diverse characters, romance, mystery, and heartbreak. Each chapter is told from either Linny or Sebastian’s point of view; with Linny’s chapter starting out with a missing person and Sebastian’s with a quote from his favorite book. Both Linny and Sebastian come from diverse backgrounds; Linny is half Nigerian, while Sebastian grew up in a house where Spanish was always the first language spoken, even though things have changed since his mother remarried. While this does not take center stage, it is discussed in various parts of the book for both characters, and Sebastian frequently speaks in Spanish. Readers will see the romantic spark forming between the pair, and paired with the mystery of what happened to Grace, they will be sucked in to this story. Highly recommended for libraries where realistic fiction is popular, as well as romance.
