“Take the map of Africa, place Europe and America together and there's still room left. Why be a sunflower and turn toward the sun? I myself am the sun!” - Ousmane Sembène

1-3 books (mostly fiction, some nonfiction) from or about each of the 54 countries in the African continent. Listed by country from Algeria to Zimbabwe. (Unfortunately, no books for Niger included). The first book listed is a book by a Kenyan writer that encompasses why this list exists.

Southern Hemisphere reads!! we will be running an unofficial SH season readalong, and our Spring readalong book is Wale Rider (1/9-30/11)! this is for any books written by SH authors, especially those set here, so pop your fav recs in the comments 😁 (i haven't read all of these! so double check content warnings if you need to)

a list of books that catapult you right into a different historical & cultural context and part of the world because of how vivid the writing is.

Books that aren't set in the US or UK, as those books dominate reading lists. I'm trying to collect as many different countries as possible, but sometimes there will be 2-3 books from one country.

Books set in Kenya!
