The story is an anecdotal retelling of a Christmas from the view of a young child and is a romanticised version of Christmases past, portraying a nostalgic and simpler time.     Weird. I read it out loud to my husband, who is sick with the flu, and we agreed it was lyrical but very strange. It starts so suddenly that I thought my copy from the library must have had pages torn out. But no - the first page of the book is on the reverse of the frontispiece, so nothing was missing.
