Want You Still

Want You Still

C.E. Ricci

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

The heart always wants what it can't have... Duty, honor, and sacrifice. Dedicating my life to these elements, for family and country, leaves little for myself in return. It’s why I indulge in a no-strings hookup with a handsome stranger mere days before heading half-a-world away. Except one night turns into a week-long fling, creating a connection at the most inopportune time. And neither of us want it to end. Staying in touch is easy at first, but dwindles to radio silence and distant memories as time passes. I didn’t expect him to reemerge in my life months later, now belonging to someone else. It should be enough for us both to walk away. To push down this relentless, aching want. But we don’t… We can't. Because the heart always wants what it can’t have.

After sitting on this for a few days, I've decided to lower my rating to 3.5. I flew through this and was living for the drama. However, I can't get past the overall timeline. I feel like I would have eaten this up wayyyyy more if it spanned years rather than a few months. The pacing of each of the relationships just didn't work for me.

I did love the tension in this, though. There are some great one-liners as well, and the forbidden aspect is well written. I really was freaking the fuck out for the majority of this. The wedding, the letters and the pining all had me ILL. My anxiety was INSANE. (Even if the whole wedding thing didn't really make any sense and was a little convulted.... like how are you marrying someone you know nothing about.)

Bonus points to the ladies for not making Emily a monster, though. I truly hate when the wife is turned into a literal demon for the sake of making us root for the couple. I also ate up the cameos bc EASTON MY BABY.

I think a lot of my issues with this could have been solved if it was longer tbh. I needed more time with the main couple to really fall in love with them, and that just didn't happen for me with this.
