Dolls: red or black; capsules or tablets; washed down with vodka or swallowed straight-for Anne, Neely, and Jennifer, it doesn't matter, as long as the pill bottle is within easy reach. These three women become best friends when they are young and struggling in New York City and then climb to the top of the entertainment industry -- only to find that there is no place left to go but down -- into the Valley of the Dolls.

being a woman is a prison. given the chance to escape from your prison, wouldn't you? all you need is a little doll...

this was a wonderful read. sure, it's jumpy. sure, it seems like a novella at times with the dramatics. and sure, it's a product of its age. but even so, it's timeless. it's depressing in the most humorous way. i saw the ending coming from a mile away and yet i sank into the last chapter, shouting frequently at the book. i had great compassion towards the three ladies that make up this story and yet, was so frequently disappointed with their choices but that's just it - people never live as WE want them to, why should fictional characters be any different? i get the hype. i truly do. i saw a little of myself in anne, neely and jennifer and a lot of the world around me in their world, from 60 years ago and when a book is a mirror, it bonds us to it.
