Monday Charles is missing, and only Claudia seems to notice. Claudia and Monday have always been inseparable—more sisters than friends. So when Monday doesn’t turn up for the first day of school, Claudia’s worried. When she doesn’t show for the second day, or second week, Claudia knows that something is wrong. Monday wouldn’t just leave her to endure tests and bullies alone. Not after last year’s rumors and not with her grades on the line. Now Claudia needs her best—and only—friend more than ever. But Monday’s mother refuses to give Claudia a straight answer, and Monday’s sister April is even less help. As Claudia digs deeper into her friend’s disappearance, she discovers that no one seems to remember the last time they saw Monday. How can a teenage girl just vanish without anyone noticing that she’s gone?

3.5 stars** it’s sad to know that what happened to Monday, happens to a lot of children.. abuse going unnoticed and especially having the system not give a shit at all and letting that abuse go too far. This story was also about grief and how that can affect someone so drastically. Always trust your gut no matter what.
My review will be all over the place. The signs of abuse were there everyone noticed it and no one seemed to enact anything. I pitied Claudia because of how frustrated she must have been. The adults not listening parallel so many real life situations. I was devastated to hear about how Monday and August died. I didn’t think about Claudia being a reliable yet unreliable character. The book was all over the place because mimicked how Claudia’s mind worked. It was baffling to see how this is how black people are treated in America.
This book had another layer to me that was especially personal. I was so angry to see how the school swept her under the rug. Everyone stayed in their lane with their blinders on. I did appreciate the one teacher that stood up for Monday.
