Despite having a shocking plot twist that I didn't see coming, I'm not exactly thrilled by this book and here are the reasons why:
1. repetitive monologues from Joe (and dialogues between him and his wife) - I can't count how many times he mentioned how "Alice is wise for her age" or how "Ben was competitive" or "how much he loves his wife despite her doing shady stuff"
2. Joe constantly doing the exact OPPOSITE of what the smart thing would be in a certain situation - e.g. telling someone private info, meeting suspicious people alone, ignoring legal advice from a professional, rummaging through other people's stuff while they're IN THE ROOM NEXT DOOR...
3. the classic villain monologue - the one where they tell you everything they planned and how they did it
4. this is a bit spoilery so... I'm all about forgiveness and love and trying to salvage your marriage, but Joe seriously...how MANY TIMES does your wife have to LIE to you before you stop telling her "it's okay, I forgive you right away" and start thinking "hey, maybe she really is doing something bad and shady when she keeps changing the story like a million times and just crying her way out of every situation"
Not all of it was bad - as I said before, the ending truly shocked me + the writing is light enough that I flew through the whole book in 2 days. I also have to admit that the plot surround the twist was really clever, the scheming and everything it took to make it work.
Lies by T. M. Logan published by St. Martin's Press is one of those mysteries that you can’t put down. I have to say what caught my attention was. WHAT IF YOUR WHOLE LIFE WAS BASED ON LIES? How can you not want to read a book that starts with that? John thought he had everything in his life. A wonderful life with his “great” wife Mel and son William who I loved as a character. Like a few other readers found that the writing style was gripping and I felt like I could sympathize with John the entire time I was worried for him and I loved the journey all the way through. Have you ever dropped in unexpectedly on your spouse, when and where they least expected to see you? Joe Lynch did when his young son, Will, spotted his wife’s car in traffic, he followed, intrigued as she turned into a hotel car park. Just one impulsive decision and BAM, Joe’s life will never be the same. Not for him, his family or their friends either. The roller coaster that unfolds after that decision makes for a great book. I love a book that I can guess wrong and I was so wrong with this one and I loved it. You will ask T.M Logan questions along the way and he will lie because what you think you know you don’t. Hands down will be reading more books by this author. Thank you Netgalley and all involved for my copy.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bonnier Zaffre for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I had heard about this book in one of the Goodreads groups and after seeing it on NetGalley I applied to read it. I'll admit, the description was a bit confusing. The tag line makes it seem like some life altering secret but then the description basically gives the entire first 3 chapters away which was a bummer. As for the actual story, it's well written and while I thought I had figured the book out early on the ending REALLY shocked me. That being said I found I lost interest in the middle of the book. I think because the author is trying to be predictable so you're surprised at the end they add too many twists and turns in the middle of the story so you're constantly trying to digest new developments. It just got to be too much and I had a hard time paying attention to the story.
Overall, it's a solid 3 star book.
