The Longest Holiday

Paige Toon

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

He's smiling down at me with tears in his eyes as I say my solemn vow:'I, Laura, take thee, Matthew, to be my lawful wedded husband…' I thought I would never feel like this about anyone ever again. Not after my first love… Not after the heartbreak and the loss and the trying to pick myself back up again… Then I met Matthew, and I know that he has my heart forever: my perfect, gorgeous, adoring Matthew. And then I wake up. And I remember that he's not perfect. He's so far from perfect that my heart could surely collapse from the pain that instantly engulfs me…To say Laura is unlucky in love is an understatement. Her first boyfriend died in a horrific accident, and now she's just discovered that her husband of six months has been hiding a terrible secret. Devastated and unwilling to face reality, she escapes on a girls' holiday to Key West with her best friend Marty. But a deep and instant attraction to a sexy Cuban scuba diver takes her completely by surprise. When her two weeks in the sun come to an end, Laura doesn't want to go home again. But she can't run from real life forever. Can she?

This was a fantastic read! It was my first Paige Toon book (I've managed to collect quite a few of her books, oops), and I really adored it to the point wherein I initially felt a tiny bit worried that the others will pale in comparison. But I'm currently reading Johnny Be Good and I can confirm that the worry wasn't necessary.

This book is a fun, light contemporary that is the perfect addition to summertime. I read this in one sitting on a cool summer evening and thoroughly enjoyed every single moment of it. Though the book as a whole is lighthearted and frequently amusing, the backbone of the plot covers a lot of serious issues which are definitely in need of further discussion in chicklit.

I really admired Laura throughout this book. Even though she is hurt by her husband's disloyalty to her, she doesn't stop it from beginning to find herself. She does exactly what her heart wants her to do, and what her instincts are telling her to do, despite how many people are telling her to "stop being childish" and come home to face the 'marriage' that she left and the loving husband. I personally found it barbaric that her family weren't more understanding of her position; though I did think the clear generation gap and thus differing opinions on marriage rather fascinating. Laura was out to fix her heart and to find a way to live again. She knew that forgiving Matthew wasn't an option, really, because she would continuously be worried that he was being unfaithful or their marriage wouldn't be the same again... and so she didn't want to go back. She spread her roots, and I admired her courage. I admired the way she found another way to live and to thoroughly enjoy her life. I loved how she wasn't a petty, immature character and the way she handled Matthew throughout. She knew when it was a good time to answer her phone and she also knew when to leave it. There wasn't much pettiness which I absolutely admired, and it truly helped me enjoy the story because it actually felt like the characters were acting their ages.

Paige crafted an amazing bunch of characters with immense personalities. I hated some (Matthew), loved others (Leo), and some really did a 180 on me (Bridget). This is a bunch of characters that I adored following and couldn't get enough of. They were all written so well and each of their stories and additions were captivating right up until the end of the book - and even then I found myself wanting more.

Paige's writing is absolutely fantastic. Not overly descriptive, yet not too vague. A fantastic level of description vs imagination goes into this story and it makes for a stunningly exciting, funny, charming read which I would recommend to anyone!

This was an amazing all rounder book, and I cannot wait to read another from Paige Toon! This is one of my favourites of the year, without a doubt, and I will always look at this book and smile (maybe one day, I'll re-read it!)
