As an alien romance I'm going to start by saying, this is a bit of a misnomer. We're basically dealing with a different human culture here. The premise of this series, if you're unfamiliar by book #3, is that the 'aliens' are a Master/slave culture and the planet they are interacting with is considerably less advanced and unfamiliar with that sort of play.

I enjoy BDSM incorporated into my romance and this managed to include a dynamic introduction into that lifestyle not with an unwilling heroine, but an enthusiastic and curious one.

If you are familiar with BDSM in sci-fi romance you'll know that most authors choose to create heroines that are usually unwilling(or too shocked) to participate and are then 'seduced' into changing their minds. For me I feel like this is so far outside of a healthy relationship I have a hard time connecting with the actual romance in those books, to me romance requires consent, and no matter what the kink, the basis for any kind of play requires consent.

This was by far my favorite book in the series and that was entirely because of the relationship that is played out between the main characters.
