I joined the team at Jameson Force Security three months ago and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. Leaving behind the Marine Corps together, my dog Omega and I made the cross-country trek to Pittsburgh for an exciting new career. Now I get to spend my days doing dangerous missions with my team and Omega gets to spend his days relaxing, unless there are explosives to be sniffed, and then he’s all paws on deck. When Omega—who I affectionately refer to as Bubba—snacks on something he most definitely shouldn’t have, an emergency trip to the vet introduces me to Abigail Blackburn. She’s a little quirky, a lot smart, and completely captivating. She also has a penchant for trouble and when Abby makes it her own personal mission to expose the puppy mill industry, she finds herself mixed up with unsavory characters who aren’t happy with her efforts to cut into their profits This seedy underbelly is a dangerous place, particularly for a well-intentioned, yet somewhat naïve, small-town vet. What began as peaceful protests outside of local pet stores has escalated into something that threatens Abby’s safety, and I refuse to sit by and watch her get hurt. Somehow this raven-haired beauty has gotten under my skin, and I don’t hesitate to call in my teammates at Jameson to help keep her safe. Now I find myself trying to balance my need to protect Abby while helping her successfully complete her mission, but also redirecting her focus long enough to show her that I’ve completely fallen for her. One thing is certain—this is going to be my toughest assignment yet.

Another wonderful addition to the Jameson Force Security series. It seems like it could be the last of the series, too. Although, as I had suspected while reading and meeting new characters, there will be a series that’s sort of spun off of this one.
Abby is a spitfire. She doesn’t back down no matter what. If she believes in something (or someone), there’s nothing that will deter her from fighting for what she knows is right. It would often make me want to grab her by the shoulders and shake some sense into her. Abby is also smart enough to realize when she’s gotten in too deep and she is appropriately remorseful in those cases and strives to do better instead of going back and doing it all over again like sometimes happens in books.
Kellen and Abby meet when his dog has an emergency and Abby is the veterinarian on call. From that first meeting, there is a connection. Kellen is a sucker for those that need protecting and for animals, so Abby’s crusade to shut down a puppy mill in their area pulls him in right away. Not only because he is disgusted by what is happening and wants to save the dogs, but because Abby is biting off more than one person can chew but, as I mentioned before, shows no signs of backing down even in the face of danger.
I loved seeing all of the Jameson Force Security gang banding together to help this couple. This is something that is not one of their cases, but it’s important to Abby so it’s important to Kellen so it’s important to them all. Good thing, since the puppy mill operation is just the tip of the iceberg and Abby is stepping into a lot more danger than she initially realized.
Not only is Abby a vet and animal advocate, but turns out she is also from a family that is famous for the horses they breed. There is a lot to Abby’s past that has to be unpacked, but it’s brought out in an organic way that also helps to introduce the new series I spoke of above. I loved meeting Abby’s family, especially her overbearing brothers. I just knew this family would have some tales to tell from that first meeting, and sure enough, the note from the author at the end says their series will be coming in 2024! I can’t wait.
