First, I have to express how much I love the FMC, as I love all of this author’s heroines. She doesn’t let any man keep her down or treat her like a wilting flower. The following thought Lily has after she’s told she shouldn’t panic about her brother’s disappearance because he’s “a grown man” gave me a huge smile.
"Meaning a grown man could not disappear or be hurt in some way? That testicles made one infallible?"
I’m not generally one for a contentious relationship. I’m fine with enemies to lovers, but not when the couple is mean to one another or constantly sniping. What I loved with this story is how much Calvin adored the fire Lily had. He loved going toe to toe with her and seeing her brilliant mind at work. Of course, it led to some fights. Calvin was so impressed with Lily during these fights that it made them fun instead of tense. Lily is a very outspoken woman, Calvin never wanted to see that fire within her stamped out.
Lily’s hard-headed personality could go a bit too far sometimes, but it was always from a place of caring. I hated that Calvin kept secrets from her, yet understood his reasons. To Calvin, a promise is a promise and must be kept at all costs. His promise to his best friend was made well before he met Lily and his moral center wouldn’t let him stray from his path even for the love of his life.
Calvin and Lily have great chemistry, both while fighting and while getting along. They both have a need to fight for what is right and good, no matter the consequences to themselves. I love that about them. Yet sometimes sticking to their guns put others in danger and I wasn’t always happy with them seeming to be oblivious to some of the backlash from their actions. It was almost like they would pick and choose which repercussions they wanted to acknowledge.
All in all this book was great fun with some intense moments of suspense.
