This list shows a specific type of book where a living being in nature or a nostalgic object becomes a (frequently anthropomorphised) symbol in the book to connect the characters (and the reader) to the past and bears witness to the human condition. Often these books depict generational trauma, tradition, and other legacies of our ancestors.

i tend to love my moody, difficult & often devastating fiction but i also appreciate when the melancholy is laced with bittersweetness, joy, tenderness, etc and a general reminder that life can indeed be worth living.
