The writing style took a little getting used to, but I overall enjoyed the descriptive, almost flowery prose. Occasionally, as I was listening to the audio book, the turn of phrase really stood out and emphasized a point. On the other hand, sometimes Conroy launched into descriptions of things and I became lost, having to start the track over to hear the subject of the paragraph again.

I LOVED the descriptions of the low country of South Carolina--though before now I've never had the desire to be southern, Conroy really made me see and feel how his upbringing was, including what inborn traits this left Tom with, and I now want to read a bit more southern literature and more Conroy.

I thought Tom was a complex character. I had a hard time identifying with him, and sometimes had trouble even liking him as an adult. It was much easier to like the younger Tom.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, I was very moved at some of the more poignant scenes. Felt like I really understood and loved Susanna and Luke. It was easy for me to see both the doctor's and Tom's points of view when it came to Tom's mother, who was an intriguing character to me.
Would highly recommend.
