Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

A sexy enemies-to-lovers, grumpy/grumpy romance from Amazon top 50 bestselling author Ava Hunter Ash Keller prefers to keep her heart colder than the morgue. Having sworn off love after a disastrous breakup, she’s learned to thrive in her new career as a death doula. When her millionaire client, Augustus Fox, asks her to accompany him on an all-expenses paid trip to mend family ties and fulfill last wishes, she agrees. There’s just one nail in her coffin. Nathaniel Whitford—her client’s absurdly gorgeous, grumpy doctor of a grandson—is along for the trip. A man who has hated her guts since she crashed his wedding years ago. It’ll be a miracle if she survives this vacation without being tossed into a volcano. Still, Ash refuses to let Nathaniel’s smug smirk and rippling pectorals take her focus away from her death doula-ing duties. She can survive two weeks in paradise with his offensively handsome face. But when falling coconuts and family drama threaten to derail the vacation, Ash and Nathaniel strike a deal: Bury their animosity and make the vacation perfect for Augustus. Soon, a tentative bond—and mutual attraction—forms between the unlikely pair. With every tropical misadventure and steamy late-night hookup, Ash realizes there’s more to Nathaniel than his barbed banter and uptight façade. Suddenly love seems more complicated than death. And as the trip comes to an end, Ash must decide whether she’ll keep her heart six feet under or risk it all…for better or hearse.

    Tropes:
    Enemies to lovers
    Black cat girl
    Forced proximity
    Opposites attract
    Grumpy x grumpy
    Vacation romance
    Third Person
    Dual POV
    He falls first

FMC stops MMC’s wedding as a professional wedding objector.
As karma would have it, she finds herself meeting the MMC while working as his grandfather’s death doula.

Miscommunication really agitated me with this book. Somethings just require communication. And it was there.

There is family dynamics in this book and it was amazing to read how the FMC maneuvered in this family to get them to accept death and life. There was banter, a little bit of spice and drama. And most of it happens in two weeks. Nathaniel was amazing. He’s a golden retriever. He cares about Ash and he falls first. Not surprised. Augustus made me cry at some point in the book.

I loved the diabetes side of this book. I’m diabetic and this was too real for me. Diabetes is a tough thing to live with.

Let’s learn to get therapy if a breakup is hard. Self destructors are so many around and this pissed me off to be honest in the book. The doubting was too much but I guess in the end it all worked out.

Third person is a lot of work. I’m so used to 1st person that this took me days to finish.

    This book was everything!

It was so fun and wholesome! At the same time, it makes you think about deeper issues, about death and passing, grief and regrets and lots of opportunities.
Ash is my spiritual animal! She's so amazingly herself, even when her insecurities hit hard! And Nathaniel is this big, sexy grump of a man that constantly makes me swoon! Seriously, these two together are quite a pair! The banter between them is never boring and annoying each other is definitely foreplay!
One of my favourite things was how Nathaniel always made sure Ash was OK, that she had enough food and sugar (She is diabetic btw). He is such a care bear in his grumpy way!

I adore the weirdness, the sass, the ALL BLACK everything, the morbid, quirky thoughts and how Nathaniel just went along with it and the weird family that we got to meet during the book.

And being able to see more of Tessie and Solomon was a treat! Tessie and Ash are really soul sisters, the sun and the moon, Ying and Yang!

This book really is a masterpiece, it made me laugh out loud. It made me feel OK with all my quirks, and it made me see death differently.

I received an ARC for this review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was so fun. Two grumpy MCs = elite banter/roasts. I loved it.
