For people who are interested in a long-term challenge to read all of the Booker Prize longlisted books, but before 2001 there were only shortlisted books so I am going to separate these into two different lists. Please see the pinned comment for the 2001+ companion list link and the winners for each year!

"Turn me over, I'm done on this side!" —St. Lawrence, whilst roasting on a spit

Gallows humor, black comedy, l'humour noir — whatever you call it, this is the place for it. This list includes André Breton's seminal anthology of dark humor, a number of the works excerpted in this anthology, and beyond. You can find a link to the complete contents of Breton's anthology in the comments.

What differs humans to animals?

These novels drift through candlelit halls, war-torn landscapes, and fragmented minds. They combine rich language with unsettling themes about obsession, identity, decay, and memory. For those who enjoy stories that breathe atmosphere and cut deep into the soul.
