Owen Lipke is looking for adventure. When he hears about a ranch in the Muskokas catering to kinky men who don’t want to settle for backroom amateurs, he signs up in a second. At the Braided Crop Ranch, Owen finds what he’s looking for: A sex positive space with safety protocols and Doms (trainers) who know their business. And a stable full of well-behaved ponyboys to prove it. Owen thinks his trainer, Kamal, is hot as hell but finds being a ponyboy isn’t as intuitive as he expected. As he struggles to learn the basics of equine pet play under the firm hand of his trainer he finds himself falling for the older, experienced, man. And perhaps Kamal is developing a thing for the young, adventurous newcomer. But there are rules at the ranch about fraternizing with staff. And Owen wonders if it’s wise to fall in love with the pragmatic trainer who unravels him layer by layer to expose his deepest needs and most secret proclivities. But perhaps wisdom is overrated. And maybe the rewards of adventure are only achieved when you abandon caution and take a huge leap of faith. BDSM/MM/Erotic Romance

** I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.**.
I admit that I requested this book partly out of homage to my favorite Ponyboy (Curtis) and partly out of shear curiosity.
I really expected it to be one of those reads that end up being WTF? Boy was I wrong.
My experience with pony play was limited to Real Sex on HBO (?). I may have seen it briefly in a movie somewhere, but it was always presented in an “OMG, can you believe these people kind of way?” I admit to thinking it was one step too far.
Although, I am much more live and let live, this was still something I could not fathom.
However, this book was so good. The way this author takes you right into this world with plenty of showing but not in either a militant look at this or a voyueristic giggly way. I feel like I have an understanding why this works for people.
I loved these characters. I loved watching Owens journey. He knows there is something missing in his sex life. He’s tried D/s but he has not found a fit. He hears about a ranch that specializes in pony play and something in his brain lights up. He applies to go and a last minute cancellation sends him quickly.
There is an immediate click with his assigned trainer, Kamal.
The seriousness that this environment has for pony play is apparent. I loved seeing all of the prep and care taken with the pony boys. Boundaries are discussed and respected. Safe words or other cues to pause or stop are respected.
In ways I never expected, this book really worked for me.
