The Duke of Danger (The Untouchables, #6)

Darcy Burke

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

After killing his opponent in a duel, Lionel Maitland, Marquess of Axbridge, is known as the Duke of Danger. Tortured by guilt, he shields himself with a devil-may-care attitude. However, when he kills another man in another duel, he’s beyond redemption, even though it wasn’t his fault. He refuses to smear a dead man’s name, especially when he’s left behind a blameless widow who doesn’t deserve an even bigger scandal. Widowed and destitute, Lady Emmaline Townsend must marry the man of her parents’ choosing or beg unsympathetic relatives for support. The only way out is to ask for help from the one man she’s sworn to hate, the man who owes her anything she asks, the man who killed her husband. They strike a devil’s bargain in which passion simmers just beneath the surface. But her dead husband’s transgressions come back to haunt them and threaten their chance at love.

What does one do when their spouse is killed in a Duel? Well, most people might grieve and then move one. However. when the man who duelled and then killed your is also known as the Duke of Danger, perhaps you marry him. Also, he is a Marquess, not a Duke. Perhaps I should have read book one first because I do not think that word means what they think it means.....
Lionel, The D.O.D, feels so much guilt. He has been in 3 duels and he killed two of his opponents. He really values honor. His honor, the honor of his friends, your honor, my honor, honor as a concept. The book opens with the duel that introduces him to Emmaline.
Emmaline ran off to Gretna Green to marry a man and now he has been killed in a duel. Her husband was in a lot of debt so she must move back to her parents home. Her parents have now decided that they shall marry her off to creepy old dude and she will not have it. The Duke who killed her husband offered to help her and initially she plans to give him the cut direct at the opening ball of the season. Now she needs him to marry her and save her from old dude.
I have to admit that I really appreciate how Emmaline starts by thinking that her first marriage was a good one. Not perfect but good. However, as she has time to process it, she starts to see that maybe her marriage was not what she thought.
Lionel has so much guilt and self flagellation. As he and Emmaline start to grow close, they both have to learn to look at things differently.
I am now going to have to read the other Dukes and the ones after as well.
