Grief turned Jaycee into a daredevil, but can she dare to deal with her past? On the anniversary of her daredevil brother's death, Jaycee attempts to break into Jake's favorite hideout—the petrifying ruins of an insane asylum. Joined by four classmates, each with their own brand of dysfunction, Jaycee discovers a map detailing her brother's exploration and the unfinished dares he left behind. As a tribute to Jake, Jaycee vows to complete the dares, no matter how terrifying or dangerous. What she doesn't bargain on is her eccentric band of friends who challenge her to do the unthinkable: reveal the parts of herself that she buried with her brother.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
High school graduate Jaycee is living every day with the memory of her brother Jake and the fact that he died way too soon. So much of who she has become has been shaped due to the fact that her brother died tragically on the day of his high school graduation.
She now finds herself running in to her old best friend Natalie; the same friend that went and got a boyfriend when Jaycee needed her the most, at one of the many places that Jake would perform daredevil tricks and leave his mark. Natalie, Zach, and Bishop follow Jaycee into the abandoned mental hospital not knowing how it will drastically change all their future plans from that moment forward.
This is a story about friendship, love, and tragedy. Each chapter switches to another characters point of view. Readers really get to delve into the minds of each character this way, and McCarthy has made it extra interesting because not all the characters chapters are in regular written format. There are a lot of tough topics that are touched in this book: death, possible rape, teenage drinking, sex, relationships, mental health...you name it, and it just might be in this book. Even despite the heavy topics, McCarthy has crafted a novel that will draw and suck readers in wondering where Jake will take the group next and how everything will play out in the end. There is adventure, suspense, and of course some romance. I found this novel to feel authentic, but also dramatic enough to keep me wanting to read more. Overall, a great read.
