This one was really good ... until it wasn’t. Brett and Emma had an amazing start. We met Brett a couple of books ago. He is a Lieutenant at the fire station where Bass and Denver also work. His wife checked out of the marriage after having their son and ends up filing for divorce, leaving Brett and their son. Brett meets Emma when she and some coworkers are taken hostage at the school where she works. Brett is one of the firemen on the scene who ends up rescuing her. He tries to ignore the connection they felt, but when she brings baked treats to the fire house to thank them, they end up being in each others lives. But she refuses to date a fireman because of what happened to her fireman father on 9/11. But Brett eventually worms his way into her heart. And even convinces her to start dating him. But after a near tragedy terrifies Emma, she refuses to have anything more to do with Brett. She does eventually get a wake up call and they do eventually get there happily ever after.

The beginning parts of this book were really good. The part for the hostage situation and the beginning stages of their courtship were great. The return of his ex-wife was hilarious because she really thought she could get Brett back. But by this point Brett hated her, and Emma played along to help drive the woman crazy. But Emma still pushed him away and the more she pushed him away, the more annoying she became. And then finally there was a time where I wanted him to just leave her because she was just too far gone. Her deep seated issues were too much to overcome. Her only saving grace was her daughter Evie. Evie and Brett had an amazing friendship and honestly, I think she was the reason Brett was so patient with Emma for so long.

Emma was very frustrating, but Brett loved her. But because he loved her, he really let her walk all over him for far too long. But he loved her, and at the end of the day he finally gets her. This may end the series about the firemen, but I believe the rockstar series is next and I believe Brett’s sister will be back in that one. So it will be interesting to see her find her love.
