Well, I would have never picked that book up on my own if it wasn't for my grandpa basically shoving it in my hands and suggesting me to read it. I guess it's because he knows I like psychological thrillers (mostly Fitzek, I am German). I didn't even know this was a series of 58 BOOKS wtf?! And well seems I have started with 44. (wooo 44 that's me!; someone please get that reference).
Now to the review. I am probably not the target audience. The humour fell really flat to me. Unfortunately, as this is (for some of the comments) one of its best qualities. Also, this whole Eve not liking fashion, make up and shopping, constantly being completely anti-feminine and -wtf why- anti-optimism. Like sorry, I don't want to hate my life by constantly expecting that the worst is going to happen. Sorry, I like snow? Also this subtle anti vegan shit? (I get it, it's socially acceptible to hate plant milk and all that but it's just so unneccessary - and yes, I know, I am a snowflake). Eve is giving "I am different than all the other women" and it's sad. I know, she works at the police, a male dominated space, and probably has to be like that to be accepted. But it's extremely annoying -for me-.
BUT I still sometimes enjoyed it. The plot was kinda interesting. All though it could have been at least 100 pages shorter if she would not repeat everything that she finds out to her husband or everyone else. As the reader I already know it, please don't repeat it AGAIN. The end could have been longer. Or at least the interrogation scene. I like that type of shit.
Yeah, maybe I should have been more biased by reading the preceding 43 books, but I didn't. Didn't connect with the characters. Still, the whole murder plot was interesting. And maybe my grandpa will give me another part of the series and I will enjoy it more because now I know those characters at least a bit. And to give this book credit: This was also the first book of my grandpa from this series and it was not only good enough to give it to his grandchild so that it can rage about it on goodreads but also that now every person that eats at their dinner table will find this one next to 6 other Nora Roberts books on their shelves (in two days there will be two more because it's his birthday and someone still liked it good enough that it was acceptible to gift him two more of those).
In the end the smile on his face when I told him that I had started to read his book, was all worth it.
I know that's not really a review. Maybe some parts. Take from that what you want. If it fits your humour, go for it. Otherwise, I believe there are better mystery books out there.
