Allie and Bea

Catherine Ryan Hyde

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Bea has barely been scraping by since her husband died. After falling for a telephone scam, she loses everything and is forced to abandon her trailer. With only two-thirds of a tank in her old van, she heads toward the Pacific Ocean with her cat—on a mission to reclaim what’s rightfully hers, even if it means making others pay for what she lost. When fifteen-year-old Allie’s parents are jailed for tax fraud, she’s sent to a group home. But when her life is threatened by another resident, she knows she has to get out. She escapes only to find she has nowhere to go—until fate throws Allie in Bea’s path. Reluctant to trust each other, much less become friends, the two warily make their way up the Pacific Coast. Yet as their hearts open to friendship and love from the strangers they meet on their journey, they find the courage to forge their own unique family—and begin to see an imperfect world with new eyes.

"People talk about it like it is. People throw the word happy around like it's the most natural thing in the world. Like if nothing is dragging you down from it, you'll pop right up and be happy without even trying. But it was never that way for me."
"No," Bea said. "It was never that way for me, either."

OH, COME ON. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I READ A BOOK BY CATHERINE RYAN HYDE, AND THE SECOND TIME I'M LEFT SPEECHLESS (and with a five star rating).
i have to say, i think the author knows a lot about people. not a specific kind of people, but just people in general. there's this fluidity in every action of every character, and there's a few elements that make them extremely believable, and the dialogue is natural and easy to understand without being boring or annoying. bea is extremely well-written, with layers over layers that shape her personality, and i love her so much, but allie has to be my favorite character in this book. i don't want to spoil it by any means, but just watching someone so young develop new ideas through new experiencies and understand the world around her by actually having to live in it is just so satisfying, so wonderul. i can't believe how great this is. please, do yourself a favor and read this book.
