I adored the first book in this series, Tough Luck. And while I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations after the first story. It’s really a wonderful book still. Duncan and Ezra are very sweet together. I was a bit worried at the beginning that it would be all bickering and they’d be having angry sex. I love this author and trust her writing, but that’s not my thing. Sorry if it’s yours, because that’s not what happens in this book.
Duncan is so organized and by-the-book and Ezra’s…not. It’s easy to dismiss Ezra as a spoiled rock star that just doesn’t understand what the real world is about. Of course, there is a tiny bit of that since he’s been a star for most of his life. Turns out Ezra has a reason for his seemingly blasé attitude when it comes to his safety and giving his fans what they want. For his part, once Duncan learns the reasons he tries to be more understanding and even a bit looser with the reins.
Duncan has always been drawn to Ezra’s music and videos, they make him feel a certain way he doesn’t necessarily like. Ezra straight out admits to himself that he’s been crushing on Duncan since they first met many years ago when he was still a teenager and Duncan came to visit his brother, Danny, on the set of their tv show. So it doesn’t take much to ignite the fire between these two.
It was surprising to me how much Ezra was the dominant figure in the bedroom. Not in an overbearing actual Dom way, but he’s bossy. And, for reasons Duncan doesn’t understand, he responds to that. Duncan is always the one in charge, always the one with the plan, always the protector. It’s a beautiful thing to see him realize that he can, in fact, allow someone else to take care of him for once. That someone putting him first is actually a wonderful feeling.
There’s a lot to work out between these two, and they don’t always handle things well. But once they start actually looking at their situation as something more than a short fling, and deal with their own insecurities, they are amazing together.
