Jeremy Marsh is the ultimate New Yorker: handsome, almost always dressed in black, and part of the media elite. An expert on debunking the supernatural with a regular column in Scientific American, he's just made his first appearance on national TV. When he receives a letter from the tiny town of Boone Creek, North Carolina, about ghostly lights that appear in a legend-shrouded cemetery, he can't resist driving down to investigate. Here, in this tightly knit community, Lexie Darnell runs the town's library, just as her mother did before the accident that left Lexie an orphan. Disappointed by past relationships, including one that lured her away from home, she is sure of one thing: her future is in Boone Creek, close to her grandmother and all the other people she loves. Jeremy expects to spend a quick week in "the sticks" before speeding back to the city. But from the moment he sets eyes on Lexie, he is intrigued and attracted to this beautiful woman who speaks with a soft drawl and confounding honesty. And Lexie, while hesitating to trust this outsider, finds herself thinking of Jeremy more than she cares to admit. Now, if they are to be together, Jeremy Marsh must make a difficult choice: return to the life he knows, or do something he's never done before--take a giant leap of faith. A story about taking chances and following your heart, True Believer will make you, too, believe in the miracle of love.

Yet another Nicholas Sparks book to add to my collection-

I found this story line was fairly predictable.

Jeremy, a struggling journalist, finally gets his big break by outing a "psychic" and revealing that he really doesn't have any special abilities. After going on national television to do an interview, a woman named Doris writes him and invites him to her small town to try and figure out what some lights in their cemetery might mean.

Jeremy is a city boy through and through, growing up in New York City his whole life, so it was funny to hear how he viewed this small town which has transformed into what most would view as literally a ghost town.

As with most of Sparks' novels, there is a love interest for Jeremy, Lexi the town librarian (working in a library myself this really made me excited about the book!). Doris just happens to be Lexi's grandmother. Also, like most of Sparks' books (I've found that usually the main character is raised by a single parent or family member), Lexi was raised by her grandmother and grandfather because she lost both of her parents in a tragic accident.

Back to the main story line though, throughout this story, you learn about Jeremy's struggle with adjusting to the small town life and his budding love for Lexi. Lexi, who has been hurt too many times to fully trust Jeremy, has obvious struggles of her own.

I won't put if Jeremy figures out what's going on in the cemetery or not (whether the much talked about lights are ghosts or something else), you'll have to read for yourself.

I liked the idea of a "true believer". Trusting in the unknown.

However, I am starting to see an obvious trend in Sparks' books. Guy meets girl. Girl and guy have issues and some kind of problem comes about. They go their seperate ways. They find one another again, aaand magical happy ending ensues.

I guess I'm just ready for something a little different.
