[From back cover] In 1952 the body of a 14-year-old girl was found in a shallow grave in a peat bog in Schleswig, Denmark. She had been led to the spot naked and blindfolded, and been drowned in about 20 inches of water. The crime was not recent. It occurred in the early Iron Age, during the First Century A.D. The body, like hundreds of others, had been perfectly preserved by the strange chemical properties of the peat. Windeby Girl, like Grauballe Man (found with his throat cut) and Tollund Man (found with a leather noose around his neck) were all murdered as sacrifices to the Mother Goddess, victims of rites of fertility. From archaeological and scientific knowledge, Professor Glob builds up a fascinating picture of the lives of these Iron-Age people - what they wore, how they worshipped, and even what they ate at their last meals.
