One summer night, Edward Alcott gives in to temptation and kisses Lady Julia Kenney in a dark garden. However, the passion she stirs within him is best left in the shadows as she weds his twin, the Earl of Greyling. But when tragedy strikes, to honor the vow he makes to his dying brother, Edward must pretend to be Greyling until the countess delivers her babe. After her husband returns from a two-month sojourn, Julia finds him changed. Bolder, more daring, and more wicked—even if he does limit their encounters to kisses. With each passing day, she falls more deeply in love. For Edward the embers of desire sparked on that long-ago night are quickly rekindled. He yearns to be her husband in truth. But if she discovers his ruse, she will despise him—and English law prevents him from marrying his brother’s widow. Yet he must dare to risk everything and reveal his secrets if he is to truly take all.

Okay, this book has a bananas plot line! Edward and his identical twin brother Albert went on a trip to Africa. While in Africa, Albert has an accident (he is attacked by a gorilla) and on his deathbed he makes Edward promise to pretend to be him. Julia, Albert’s wife is pregnant and after having many miscarriages, Albert is concerned she will miscarry when she hears he has died. Edward does what any good brother would do, and pulls a twin switch on Julia! Edward’s big secret – he has been in love with Julia for years!

I don’t think anyone can write unrequited love from a hero’s perspective like Lorraine Heath! (Shout out to Waking Up With the Duke!) Both books feature men who have been in love with a woman they have not loved for YEARS! The guilt in wanting someone who is loved by someone they are very close with is so detrimental to them! This book should not work, just like Waking Up With the Duke shouldn’t either, but the magic of Lorraine Heath ensures that they do. Fifty pages in, I was like “Albert Schmalbert” – I needed Edward to get his happily ever after! Julia is great and Heath writes her in a way that is emotionally realistic. There is this time period where she has no idea Edward is Albert and falls in love with her “husband” in a new way. It is pure romance gold!
