The series is set in a world ravaged by ancient magic, where precious gemstones bestow magical abilities on the few individuals able to harness their power. Full of clandestine power struggles and the battles between gods, the story follows Hakara, a young woman searching for her missing sister and who will do anything to find her — even lead a rebellion against the gods themselves.

I was super excited to go into this book, and while it didn't meet my expectations I had fun with it!
My main problem was the marketing of two sisters on opposite sides of a war, and then having 5 narrators - 2 being the sisters, 3 being other characters. Reading through I felt that Mullyane and Sheuan's POV at the beginning weren't needed and were there to flesh out the world, but as I did read further I did see the importance of their POVs.
The world building was super unique, and I wanted to learn more and more, but at the beginning there was a steep learning curve for myself but I did get a hang of it. And I loved how monstrous Khluen (I believe that's how you spell it) is and with how the other gods appear I wonder how they got to the body horror state they appear as.
What dropped this book for 4 stars to 3.5, was the heist aspect of Hakara's chapters. I am just not a heist girly
