Beauty's Beasts (Primordial Gates)

Beauty's Beasts (Primordial Gates)

Alex Hanson

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

I am not a woman. But I am also not a man. I won't pretend to be something I’m not, but those around me—both friends and enemies alike—are determined to make me. My village is adamant I marry the pastor's son, dress like a proper lady, and go only by the name given to me at birth. When I refuse, they cast me into The Deadwood: an enchanted forest of vines and brambles crawling with deadly demons and wicked magic. What I find waiting for me there are no demons like our legends describe, but four cursed warriors from another world, victims of a spell cast by an evil sorceress. It’s said they can be freed from their torment by a human, but not just any human, one that is neither a man nor a woman. We soon discover I’m the key to breaking this spell, but just how I’m supposed to do that remains a mystery. I must get close enough to each of the warriors to somehow lift this curse, or we’ll all be doomed to spend eternity in The Deadwood.

Absolutely in love with the diversity, visibility, and inclusivity in this book!
This was my first read by Alex Hanson, If you know me I'm a non-binary, demi & bisexual disabled baddie and I couldn't wait to read this copy with so many things I can relate to, not to mention if you're a book dragon like me this is a thicccccc trophy for your shelf so don't walk - RUN!

As always I don't post spoilers.

As far as fairytale reimaginings go I have always loved them, Alex beautifully spun their tale of beauty and the beast, only the beauty doesn't have to choose and the beasts are far more than an aesthetic. It's important to also note that in this why choose/rh no party is made to feel like an option, or given any less of a presence or importance, much love for that!
The character depth and growth as well as the world are beautifully written, you never feel as though the writer hit a white wall/hole in the plan and can feel the author's genuine joy in the words.
Be ready for a roller coaster ride that you'll want to go on again and it is a page-turner, hope you don't need any sleep!

Note: I received a copy of this book for free as an ARC reader and I am leaving this unpaid and unbiased review for all my spicy-loving peeps to go check out!

I’m DNFing this right now. I’ve only made it 16% into the story and was already struggling with certain aspects such as the curse sounding like an instructional manual and not a spell. But my over all enjoyment has declined due to the author constantly spoiling later events in the book with their marketing. I get wanting to pull readers in but this was killing my mood because slowly but surely I felt like I was having less to be discovered on my own.

Not sure if I’ll try again at a later date.
