We rejoin Annalise as she's being held in Gestapo jail after Ernst took her there. Reinhard was all too excited to find a way to execute her. Like any good lover, Ernst helps Annalise escape after she was blamed for Josef's murder. She gets home and has to tell Heinrich about her and Ernst, he didn't take this news too well and he leaves. When he comes back he blames himself for getting her into this situation and Annalise quickly says that she doesn't want to leave him for Ernst.
But Ernst and Annalise continue their affair wondering about the state of their beautiful country. They laughingly agree to meet at a park bench, no matter what, a year from May 24 1944.

Heinrich ends up leaving for a month on business and the affair really heats up. She finds out she's pregnant and has to tell him when he gets home. He's pissed, naturally, but says he never wants to talk about it again.

Heinrich and Annalise, celebrating the anniversary of their first date have it interrupted by bombs exploding near their car on the way home. Nothing is the same after this night. Ernst, Annalise and Heinrich end up sharing a bomb shelter and the boys have a serious talk when they think Annalise is asleep.

I loved this series and don't want to spoil anything. The ending was absolutely fantastic and too good to ruin! I really can't wait to read Ellie's book "The Austrian". I just wanna know what happened!!!!

If you love war stories you should definitely check out this series! Great writing as usual!
