Recs if you like Erasure...

Books that play with the "book" as a medium or are otherwise self-reflexive/meta.

My current criteria for this list are (1) does the book highlight its own textuality consistently or (2) do the metafictional elements add significantly to the themes explored or (3) does the book's use of discourse and form (e.g., narrative situation, layout) significantly differ from the norm?

Fiction has always been where truth hides. Across horror, thriller, literary fiction, fantasy & mystery every book on this list has something to say about power, who holds it, who destroys it, and how it reproduces itself.

I'm a huge fan of Maisie's music and her newest album Florescence has been playing nonstop since it came out. She's a passionate reader, so over the years many books recommendations have accumulated and I thought it would be cute to make a list out of them. I asked Pagebound for books with a book inside the book. The following list is made up out of those recommendations. In some of them the MC is writing or reading a book that you also get to read, in others it is short stories or oral histories. In all of them, you get more then just one story. I have not read all of these books. I am open to more recommendations.

NB The Book of Counted Sorrows by Dean Koontz is often referenced is his other works and only later was actually written.

This is the list from The Atlantic. "In 1868, a little-known writer by the name of John William DeForest proposed a new type of literature, a collective artistic project for a nation just emerging from an existential conflict: a work of fiction that accomplished “the task of painting the American soul.” It would be called the Great American Novel, and no one had written it yet, DeForest admitted. Maybe soon."

Protagonist is lying throughout the entire novel, if anyone finds out, everything they are striving for crumbles. Suggest away!
