A group of mercenaries on an unsanctioned mission survives a plane crash in whiteout conditions in the Tian Shan mountains. The men are accustomed to danger. Now they’re growing accustomed to fear. Team leader Liev and his band of survivors are stranded in the bitter winds with little hope of rescue—or outlasting the wolves that have scented blood. In the distance is the apparent sanctuary of an abandoned stone fortress. That an ancient bulwark even exists on this forsaken summit is beyond comprehension. So is what lies on the other side of its walls. From Academy Award–winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Falling Down, part one of The Boy in the Iron Box, a blood-chilling series of short stories about an ancient secret that was never meant to be unleashed, featuring exclusive interior artwork. Each can be read or listened to in one breathless sitting.

I enjoyed this opening chapter, because let’s be real this series is one book split into 6 parts. I like that the mercenaries actually feel like modern day mercenaries, it’s clear there was some research done with writing military men. There is a good balance between action and non-action scenes, and you can definitely feel the disturbing air that’s weaving it way through the story. The Author also isn’t afraid to kill off characters. I’m definitely intrigued enough to pick up the next part.
I will say though, I am not a fan of the audiobook. At first I thought it was AI but it’s not, it’s an actual person. But I can’t tell if he has a natural deep voice or if he used some sort of voice over mod to make his voice deeper. Sometimes it just sounds too manufactured and fake, which makes it kind of annoying to listen to.
imagine my blood boiling rage when i thought jeffrey bezos was giving us ONLY ONE of SIX sections in guillermo del toro’s new series. took me five minutes of cursing amazon (and clearly not reading) until i realized the whole series isn’t on KU until 7/1… oops, my b. yup this was great, im hooked. an age old premise that started with a bang and kept things moving, no dilly dallying. not a ton happened in this teaser but it set up a great environment and i’ve got high hopes.
