"Every man is in a cage of his own making" says the Plague Doctor to our main character as he tries to figure out how to escape from his predicament. This book was a mix of Agatha Christie, Knives Out and The Good Place - all things that I enjoy but still didn't get 5 stars from me. First off, I audiobooked it and the narrator had that newscaster cadence which can get grating to listen to and also every female character sounded like a bad impression of the Queen Mum. The story is super twisty and almost everything is a clue that comes back around later to make you say "ohhh...that's what that was about". Although everything did come together at the end, it didn't help alleviate the confusion I felt throughout most of the story as my brain tried to work to put the pieces together. It reminded me of one of my first audiobook experiences when I accidentally listened to Part 2 of "The Time Traveler's Wife" before Part 1. I felt like I was dropped into the middle of some action and I was saying "wait, WHERE are we? WHEN are we? WHAT is happening?" literally I had to check to make sure I was on Chapter 1. I thought the story was a bit too long and the many characters were difficult to keep track of especially since we sometimes leave one character then come back to him later on. Feels weird to say, but I think this story would have been more effectively told in a visual medium rather than a written/audio one. I can totally see Rian Johnson having a good old time with this plot. I read that Netflix was supposed to produce this but it fell through - hope it finds a new home as I would love to see this on a screen.
