Dropout TV presents Dimension 20's Unsleeping City, an urban fantasy set in New York City with classic characters from Broadway Stars to Sewer Rats. Enjoy two season with the intrepid heroes and enjoy these book recommendations to pair with the vibes and cast.

These are books that involve a truth, a secret society, a government agency, an underground bureaucracy that is just out of reach of the average citizen. The ratio of fantasy to reality is oddly specific here, as well as a specific fantastical/romantic/dreamy vibe. Not all urban fantasy fits the brief, but most books will have urban fantasy elements. Definitely taking recs!!

Books with con artistry, snark and consequences

books where mycology takes over in horrific/fantastical ways

What if you looked at the city and the city looked back?

Have you ever wanted a PhD in English Lit? Do you think fantasy is a legitimate field of literary criticism? Would you like a glimpse into the psyche of someone who does?

These are the books included (or excerpted from) on my comprehensive exams list for a dissertation on fantasy. It is not even a remotely comprehensive list of fantasy texts and criticism (yes, I see the irony).

You read a book. For the first twenty minutes, everything is going splendidly. Then it happens. A random woman character unfathomable horrors happen to her... But the male characters have either no horror or a reasonable amount of horror happen to them. Or maybe it's a woman that should have more to do in the plot. It feels out of nowhere and you feel inclined to gloss over it. Don't. Think about it. Is there a pattern? Whatever the case, this list is my way of keeping score.

All of these authors are problematic but I will continue to have them in my taste, my TBRs, and my lists because I firmly believe that we can learn both technique and warning signs from authors. Avoid these books if you want enjoyment, fun, and whimsy. Read closely. If you look, the warning signs were there in plain text the whole time.

Una selección personal de novelas y clásicos que vale la pena leer al menos una vez: historias inolvidables, autores esenciales y libros que dejaron huella en la literatura. Una lista para explorar mundos, ideas y personajes que siguen resonando mucho después de cerrar la última página.

Most popular or most read books under the category of "Low Fantasy" (magical or supernatural elements enter into an otherwise normal, rational world, or a secondary world that is gritty, grounded, and low-magic, magic has to be hidden/not widely practiced).

Only the first book of a series will be added.

Inspired (or Incensed, you decide which) by the Guardian's Top 100 Novels of all Time, my bookclub decided to do our OWN top 100 list! Collected via a Google Form, each member submitted their top 10 books of all-time. We didn't limit to just fiction, and did accept entire series as "one book" — because honestly, picking is hard! As I can't order these by vote count, this is just all of them with no particular order whatsoever. Who knows, maybe we'll do this again sometime — enjoy!
