I know this book is a part of a series, but the ending is pretty unsatisfying because the “good guys” didn’t win. Which I fully know is the point, but still. A great read with deep, literary insight into colonial Indonesia.

I literally just gasped. This is a very long book but I literally can’t put it down. Truly a masterpiece. I had this book picked out because one of my reading goals this year was to read more non-Western (specifically, Asian) authors. I’m Indonesian by ethnicity and was wondering if there were books that would be an example of Indonesian literature, and this book was on the top of that list. What a phenomenal piece of literature.
