Heist Royale (Thieves' Gambit, #2)

Kayvion Lewis

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

The high-stakes sequel to Thieves' Gambit, for fans of Jennifer Lynn Barnes and Ally Carter. It's been six months since the end of the Gambit. Instead of winning an impossible wish, Ross has the threat of her family’s execution hanging over her head. Devroe, the only person Ross thought she could trust, could wish the Quests into oblivion at any time. Shockingly, despite his betrayal, Devroe is still making a play for Ross’s heart as the two work together pulling jobs for the Organization. But Ross has learned her lesson: A Quest can only trust another Quest. When Ross finds herself at the center of a power struggle within the Organization, she sees her chance to change her fortunes. As a new deadly Gambit develops for control of the criminal underworld, Ross strikes a risky deal to guarantee protection for herself and her family. In this final clash, Ross will square off against a ruthless opponent who will stop at nothing to seize power, and in their corner will be not only Devroe but his mother, who wants to destroy the Quests at any cost. The new Gambit takes Ross and her crew into the intoxicating casinos of Monte Carlo and across treacherous snow-covered slopes in Antarctica as Ross competes against Devroe in a fight for her life. Loyalties will be tested, backs stabbed, hearts broken. May the best thief win.

~~Thank you to NetGalley, Edelweiss, and Penguin Random House for the ARC!~~

    4.5/5 stars rounded up!

God, this series is just so fun.

Everything I liked from Lewis' predecessor stands strong in this one. The fun bantering and friendship, action-packed heists that would look absolutely incredible on screen, and writing with excellent pace that suits the story and makes reading fly fast in a good way.

I just adore Ros' friendships, especially with Noelia and Kyung-soon. The theme of friendship is really strong in this book because it heavily ties with the conflict with Ros' mom and her inability to have any close relationship besides the one with her daughter. The buildup and exploration of that dynamic throughout the book was done very well; watching Ros grow to realize she couldn't be like her mother was very satisfying.

The romance is still as good this time around. The twist from the last book left Ros and Devroe in a very awkward place, with Ros icing him out as he fails to flirt his way back into her good graces. How they solve this conflict kinda felt too neat of a wrap up (Ros' mom became head of the organization, which led Devroe to wish he be killed if any other Quest was. Diane obviously can't kill a Quest without dooming her only son, so her revenge plan was instantly killed on the spot), but it didn't deter any of the enjoyment I've gotten out of reading it. If anything, the ending left me wondering if this series will continue. I certainly wouldn't complain if the whole gang came together for a heist rather than splitting against each other like they have been throughout this series.

All in all, I had so much fun reading this series, and I'm left to wonder what Lewis will do next!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC for my honest review :)

    3.5 star read

Fast paced, easy to read, and a fun read. I do think that I would have enjoyed this book even more if I had read the 1st book in this series, however I still found it enjoyable.

This feels like a good late fall read so I am excited to see more and more reviews come in on this one!

Oh and don't let my reading dates deter you, I started this book in June but then had a bunch of ARCs to read that were coming out before this one :)
