I’ve completely fallen in love with the Dark Shores Series. There’s a fascinating world that the author built, lots of action, complex characters, betrayal, and plot twists galore.
Tarnished Empire is the prequel to the first book, Dark Shores, which centers around Legatus Marcus and the 37th legion’s time conquering Hydrilla, one of the last standing rebel holdouts in Bardeen. The Empire has been slowly conquering all countries on the continent in their quest for wealth and domination. The fortress’s fall will bring the last remaining resistance fighters to its knees, and finally let the 37th escape the “tutelage” period they’ve suffered under the 29th legion.
The best edition to the series is the 37th’s primus (a high ranking officer) under Marcus, named Agrippa. He’s a smart talking, funny edition to the series, and has become my favorite character. Underneath the sarcasm and bravado is a smart and lethal soldier, as well as a caring brother in arms to his men.
Of course in the Dark Shores world there is always a love story with a twist: There are Bardeen rebels in the Legion’s followers camp, and one of them is torn between helping her people and the boy who shines underneath his soldier’s uniform.
Throw in some deadly friction between the 37th and 29th, political plotting, and the military genius that is Marcus, and you have the page turner that is Tarnished Empire.
I felt like Dark Shores lacked showing more of how Marcus is called a prodigy, but you definitely get ‘the more’ in this story.
