Recs if you like The Cloud Roads (Books of the Raksura, #1)...

gotta catch 'em all! fantasy books that feature a collection/array of different fantastical creatures, whether they just exist in the world surrounding the characters, are the main characters, or are the main focus of the story!

Do you feel like you've read everything there is to read? Or get annoyed that the same books are on all the rec lists? Well, here are some more obscure masterpieces!

Some of the covers are terrible - especially among the older or self-pubbed books; there's a few YA in here; and some that are science fantasy rather than 'pure' fantasy. But trust me: they're all EXCELLENT. (And if you already love a bunch of these, let's be friends!)

This is NOT for books featuring trans or nonbinary protagonists in worlds with gender systems that mimic modern real-world ones. This is for books like Left Hand of Darkness or the Imperial Radch series, where the setting has an invented system of gender and/or sex, or of assigning gender/sex. I'm including interesting-to-me matriarchies (so, not ones that are just our patriarchy but gender-swapped) and gender systems that include male and female but have other genders/sexes too.

The top 100 fantasy novels according to the r/fantasy list as voted on by the community - this includes series (represented by the first book in the series) and standalones.

The list is in order with Middle Earth ( represented by Lord of the rings) being number 1 going down to the 100th.

(Note: Mistborn is position 8 while Cosmere is position 35 - as Mistborn is within the Cosmere I lumped it in with the 35th position so it is lower down than on the original list)

Did you watch Supernatural and have a crush on (both versions of) Ruby? Maybe you had a crush on Crowley? Maybe even a crush on Castiel? Then you are in luck because this list is for you!!! Angels and demons abound in these books, some more biblically accurate than others.

One of my favorite newly-discovered tropes is that of the reluctant hero. They're not a chosen one, not good at everything right away, don't want to be saving the world. They're dragged kicking and screaming on adventures, complaining about it the whole way, and maybe even suck at the job they have to do at first.

(This list is presented by Duck Prints Press, the indie publisher focused on publishing queer art and stories by queer creators!)

Tired of worlds in books that seem too grounded in reality? This is the list for you! It features speculative fiction (fantasy, sci fi, horror) and new weird books with worlds that are extremely different from anything found on earth. Only the first book in a series is included. I have not read most of the books on this list, so comment if you think a book doesn’t fit the spirit of the list. I’m also always open to suggestions for books to add!

There are a few in here for which people might, hypothetically, argue over whether they're queer enough for the queer list, but which I've included anyway because vibes/because I personally interpret them as queer. For example: older books that were originally intended or most commonly regarded as feminist but not queer, but which many queer people may relate to or find meaning in regardless (e.g. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, or The Song of Mavin Manyshaped by Sheri S. Tepper).
