Part thriller, part romance, The Friend Scheme is another twisty #ownvoices YA novel from Cale Dietrich, author of The Love Interest. High schooler Matt's father is rich, powerful, and seemingly untouchable—a criminal with high hopes that his son will follow in his footsteps. Matt's older brother Luke seems poised to do just that, with a bevy of hot girls in tow. But Matt has other ambitions—and attractions. And attraction sometimes doesn't allow for good judgement. Matt wouldn't have guessed that when he makes a new friend, one who is also carrying a secret. The boys' connection turns romantic, a first for both. Now Matt must decide if he can ever do the impossible and come clean about who he really is, and who he is meant to love.

So the good news is, this was better than The Love Interest.
The bad news is, it still wasn't great.
There were some good things. I reeeeally loved Luke. Like. A+, Luke. I liked Cassidy too. The romance was definitely pretty sweet too.
But it just lacked a lot. There was TOO much focus on the romance and not enough on the background. Like, Matt is the son of a crimelord but like... we barely get any of that. They throw some Molotov cocktails and talk about killing their enemies. But like... there is no hardened crime going on. I know it's YA, but I still feel like they could have given me SOMETHING.
This book also has no climax. Or maybe it does, but the climax is garbage. I guess the climax is when the bar is set on fire? But like?? What a boring climax?? AND THE ENDING?? WHAT??? Matt is like, "Dad, I don't want to be a criminal like you." And his dad is like, "WHAT??" and then about five seconds later he's like, "Okay, son. Go to Cali. Love you xoxo"
If he could have just told his dad this at any time like... ugh. HOW WAS THERE NO CONFLICT HERE? That was just. Yeah, it's a no from me. And then Jason just showing up where he works? After a year? Did they talk in that time? Did Jason know he worked there? Like where was any of the explanation there?
Will I try more of his novels? Yeah. I'm really looking forward to the one he's cowriting with Sophie Gonzales, and I loved Only Mostly Devastated by her. So hopefully I'll like it more.
In other good news, I've officially read ALL my most anticipated released for 2020.
