Do Over

Do Over

Serena Bell

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

I’ve gotten a do over... And I’m determined not to screw it up. I’m a tough guy. I’m a whiz with power tools, earned my hard hat and work boots the legit way, and can throw a football spiral that makes pro quarterbacks weep. But when Maddie, the mother of my son, shows up on my doorstep in tears, I have zero defenses. I can’t say no to my kid. Or his mom. Never have been able to. That’s how I make two big impulsive decisions: giving Maddie a bed to sleep in… and climbing in with her. Now I’ve got my kid and his mom living under my too-small roof, and I can’t put the attraction genie back in the bottle. I always knew I wasn’t the guy anyone wanted as a dad or a husband, and nothing’s changed in that department. But I can’t deny that this time, something’s different. I just hope that thing is me.

**I received an ARC of this book courtesy of Net Galley and the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own and given freely. **

This story started off a bit rough for me. Not only did I have to get used to the author’s writing style, but I also was not loving Jack, the hero of the story. In fact, I downright disliked Jack in the beginning. Before I got to the chapters with the point of view of Maddie, only having seen her through Jack’s eyes, I wasn’t crazy about her either. Fear not, they are both actually really great people. So if you feel the same in the first few chapters just soldier on, it gets so much better.

As this story progresses, the reader slowly gets the reasons Jack is not the best of dads. As much as his reasoning doesn’t make sense, it also does in a backward sort of way. At the same time, you can really understand how Maddie is suspicious of any effort on Jack’s part. The evidence, on the surface, points to him being an incompetent father.

One thing that was never in question for me was the chemistry between Maddie and Jack. It’s apparent from the beginning and only gets stronger as the story goes along. Also, Jack’s love for his son is so much stronger than you would initially think. Watching him mature into the dad he was meant to be is a beautiful thing.

So obviously my feelings about this story changed as the book progressed. There were still little issues here and there…mostly with continuity. Nothing major though. This is a new-to-me author that I will definitely be giving another try.

Thanks to Netgalley and Loveswept publishing for my ARC in exchange for honest review Of course thanks also goes to Serena Bell for writing the novel.
Jack and Maddie were best friends since they were little. They relied on each other whenever one had trouble. Maddie is afraid of thunder and lightning and Jack's father verbally and some physically abused him since he was a child. I found Gabe so endearing that it made the story so readable. Harris is just another tool who has no idea what he has nor what he wants. There is no place for Maddie to go so she ends up staying with Jack. I have to say the beginning of the story makes me think Jack is not cut out to be a father at all, but as the story progresses I love the relationship between father and son. I knew this was a second chance romance just by the title. I love that Sienna and Maddie form a friendship and that Jack’s mom Barbra. I think that if you like a second chance romance then this is worth the read.
