Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It’s a brilliant critique of capitalism and the extremes people will go to to escape poverty.

However, I felt that it was a little slow in places and too fast in others. In particular, I would have been interested in reading more about Bob’s second trip in the One and the aftermath of his third trip. Additionally, there were points where you could really feel that it is a product of Pohl’s time - specifically the fight that causes Klara to (temporarily) leave Gateway and her immediate forgiveness of Bob. I will cut Pohl some slack in regards to Klara’s quick forgiveness of Bob due to the intense nature of their situation/relationship, but Bob’s internal justifications were a shocking reminder of the book’s age.

I spent the entire book being so incredibly curious about the ships and the world around them and the story spent so little time exploring that. Instead most of the story was spent just hanging out, not doing much of anything. I'm still itching to know more, but this was such a mundane way to explore this setting and premise.
