The Family Gathering (Sullivan's Crossing #3)

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Having left the military, Dakota Jones is at a crossroads in his life. With his elder brother and youngest sister happily settled in Sullivan’s Crossing, he shows up hoping to clear his head before moving on to his next adventure. But, like every visitor to the Crossing, he’s immediately drawn to the down-to-earth people and the seemingly simple way of life. Dakota is unprepared for how quickly things get complicated. As a newcomer, he is on everyone’s radar—especially the single women in town. While he enjoys the attention at first, he’s really only attracted to the one woman who isn’t interested. And spending quality time with his siblings is eye-opening. As he gets to know them, he also gets to know himself and what he truly wants. When all the Jones siblings gather for a family wedding, the four adults are drawn together for the first time in a way they never were as children. As they struggle to accept each other, warts and all, the true nature and strength of their bond is tested. But all of them come to realize that your family are the people who see you for who you really are and love you anyway. And for Dakota, that truth allows him to find the home and family he’s always wanted.

This story is so much more than Dakota’s story. As with the other books in this series, the whole community is involved. We get a bit more of Cal and Maggie from What We Find. Quite a bit of Sierra and Connie, and their part of this story is just amazingly touching. We don’t see tons of Sully, but he’s in there. There are some old friends whose romance has been woven through all these books, and some old foes who aren’t to be trusted. This book just meanders along, touching on one story for a while and darting off to another as needed. It ends up a beautiful narrative.

There is no other word to describe the beginning of the friendship between Dakota and Sid other than sweet. It’s so innocent and lovely and true. They both had some bad experiences, especially Sid, but they clicked. Although Sid wasn’t looking for any sort of romantic attachment, she couldn’t help but be Dakota’s friend.

I wouldn’t consider this story “preachy” in any way, but there are so many timely issues that are addressed. What is considered stalking? Why isn’t assault reported? Can you “just get over it” if you have issues with anxiety? So many things going on here, yet the author does a wonderful job of keeping the prose from getting bogged down.

If you’re a Robyn Carr fan, you’ll enjoy this story. Even with some big issues being addressed, it was like a visiting with an old friend on the front porch with a glass of lemonade.
