Marry in haste, repent at leisure.James, Lord Kirkland, owns a shipping fleet, half a London gaming house, and is a ruthlessly effective spymaster. He is seldom self-indulgent. . .except when it comes to the gentle, indomitable beauty who was once his wife. Laurel Herbert gave James her heart as an innocent young girl—until she saw him perform an act of shocking violence before her very eyes. That night she left her husband, and he let her go without a word of protest. Now, ten years later, a chance encounter turns passionate, with consequences that cannot be ignored. But as they try to rebuild what was broken, they must face common enemies and a very uncommon love. . ..

This book started off with a bang and had all the hallmarks of being bonkers. Estranged marriage. Husband suffers malarial fever and is assaulted by thugs. Taken to his wife's hospital where she's the only one around to treat him. They get feisty while he's feverish and he doesn't remember when he's lucid. She rescues a woman from slavers. She finds out she's pregnant. This is all in the first several chapters.
Then it slows down. The external danger is not well developed. There's a scene which reads like a curtain call for the five previous couples in the series (none of which I've read), which may be fun for fans of the series but was a little extended for me.
Solid meh. The bedroom scenes were not even that interesting. And she referred to the first one as their "mating" which I did not enjoy.
Content notes for dubious consent, pregnancy in trouble, murder
