*review of volumes 11-20 / entire series*

I’ve really burnt through The Promised Neverland and had a great time doing it.

I have some issues with the series, many of which come from these last half of volumes. The series has excellent pacing in moments of tension or action, and uses it many reveals well. But at the same time some important elements feel rushed to be introduced or are forced in a little inelegantly. I feel like the series started much stronger than it ended, although I do feel it still stuck the landing.

I was struck that in the end, the villains of the series was really the systems that people in power put in place. I enjoyed how you could feel this through line throughout the series, from a number of perspectives. In a couple of ways, the ending of this series feels very impacted by Covid, and I imagine it altered the author’s approach to these topics in some ways.

That’s being said, things come together a little too neatly in some respects. But for a series with a definite end, this really worked for me and hit me in the feels consistently.
