Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again. Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Real page-turner, and I enjoyed it! Though there were a number of similarities of these wolf-people to the wolf-people of Twilight... guess I just didn't know those details were in the folklore of werewolves.

But I really liked the book! I loved the two main characters, and thought they were believable and amazing, even if the overall plot wasn't perfect.

I was feeling like a romance, so I picked this up from my school's library thinking "Oh, there is romance in this and that is what I would like." But I didn't realize that this book is so charged by romance that I feel like there wasn't anything else.

I enjoyed it enough (and I finished the series), but ugh. The teenage "instalove" was there, but then again, I can understand why. I felt like I was eating sugar cubes for this whole book.

Linger and Forever were a lot better because it wasn't ALL Sam and Grace. You really need something to break up all that romance.

This was my first book by Maggie Stiefvater, and her writing style is pure poetry. After reading Shiver, I finished the series, then went onto the Raven Boys, which was SO MUCH BETTER and I'm glad I read Shiver first because had I read it after The Raven Boys series I would have been super disappointed.
