Throne of Glass was another hyped book that was, again, a medium read.. I'm really starting to get a trauma from books that involve maps.

I must say the premise of the book was intriguing. An assassin is forced to participate in a tournament to become the king's champion and earn her freedom. At the same time, strange events are occurring in the castle.

The only problem is that is was deceiving.

And that is my main problem. What I got was a glossed over competition (that was strange to begin with... Why do you give strange trials to assassins? Why not just put them all in one inescapable room, give them a time limit and the last one standing is the champion? Isn't the king suppose to be heartless? Isn't it more dangerous to give knowledge to outlaws that can be used to their advantaged in the future? What gibes?) with a lot of romance and a dash of supernatural that just add a couple more pages.

Another issue was the characters and the way they where described.
Celaena, gosh I never know how to spell her name, was an assassin. And yet she never really was that. In the wide range of assassins types, she was a normal teen that when the plot needed, got a mean girl side.
She deals with a ton of heavy topics that ever unfold. She had potential but never truly lived to that. That is why it paid of to read Cain breaking her face. Evil, I know... There was no need for her to be an assassin, she could have been simply a normal girl caught in a web of strange lies and probably it would have been more compelling. It felt that the background was only there to justify her abilities, so it doesn't fall out of place.

And the lack of a freaking villain! The King should have been there earlier!

I did like some things. Nehemia, Chaol, Darion, the king... The other characters where well written and they added great things to the plot. The weakest scenes in my opinion happened when Caelena was alone..

This book was for sure a roller coaster, disappointing at some parts but I must say the ending was promising. I give it 3,5 stars with a lot of suffering.
