Cândido ou o Optimismo é uma das mais célebres obras de François-Marie Arouet, Voltaire (1694-1778). Publicada anonimamente em 1759 é logo identificado o seu Autor e nesse mesmo ano a obra conhece vinte edições, seguindo a sua fama para Itália e Inglaterra onde é traduzida. Voltaire foi o introdutor de um género de conto que utiliza a ironia para revelar criticamente a realidade do mundo em que vivia: utiliza a ficção como interrogação e os seus personagens agem por vezes em contradição com o senso comum da época. Em Cândido, o seu herói confronta-se regularmente com o optimismo veiculado pelas teorias de Leibniz (o melhor dos mundos possíveis), ou o seu nome não exprimisse precisamente a ideia de candura que o optimismo gera na adversidade através da existência do mal e da justiça divina.

I'm ready for the angry comments, but let me explain.
I understand Voltaire is an important author and I did like the historical accuracy and references, the cynical tone of the narrative and some parts made me laugh. A lot! I also liked the philosophical exercise, there are some really interesting perspectives in this novel.
For me, based one the value it brings to literature I would have no problems in giving it a higher rating. Except my reviews are also based on enjoyment, and honestly the story was pointless. It just went nowhere and at the mid-point it was just dragging.
Also, I understand it was historically accurate, it just became dull that women were constantly useless, looked down upon and just constantly raped. It's not a funny subject or edgy. You could also include how women were also of value if they were beautiful and that rubs me the wrong way.
So, pick it up if you want something short. Final rating: 2,75 stars.
