Pre-, early and post- apocalyptic dystopias

Apocalyptic reads with a big focus on found family. This list meshes all kinds of apocalypses, zombies included.

First of a series only, except in cases where it's further into the series that the found family element really kicks in.

My favourites are the top half of the list, if you want a place to start ;) (There's a few at the very bottom that I haven't yet read myself, so no shade to them!!)

Mini Dimension 20 series set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where empathy rules and kindness matters when helping community survive. From blood drives to sunken malls, you have such complex characters that brought me to tears (i cry a lot but truly a beautiful conversation about grief). Found family, community, and grief all come together in this survival season. These books do not guarantee a care bear feeling.
