Diana Wynne Jones

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

The definitive edition of a cult classic by the legendary Diana Wynne Jones. Imagine that all fantasy novels—the ones featuring dragons, knights, wizards, and magic—are set in the same place. That place is called Fantasyland. The Tough Guide to Fantasyland is your travel guide, a handbook to everything you might Evil, the Dark Lord, Stew, Boots (but not Socks), and what passes for Economics and Ecology. Both a hilarious send-up of the cliches of the genre and an indispensable guide for writers, The Tough Guide to Fantasyland has been nearly impossible to find for years. Now this cult classic is back, and readers can experience Diana Wynne Jones at her very incisive, funny, and wildly imaginative. This is the definitive edition of The Tough Guide, featuring a new map, an entirely new design, and additional material written for it by Diana Wynne Jones. The Tough Guide to Fantasyland is a comedic guide to fantasy literature and worlds, in the form of a travel guide provided by a management team. Each aspect of "fantasy land" has been given its own entry so that various concepts can be referenced, very similar to an encyclopedia.

This took me several months to read as it's really at its best when you read a few pages at a time and give yourself a bit of humor for the day. Much of what I've read from Jones has a very appealing, wry sense of humor and it's at full blast here. Jones pokes fun at everything from barbarians to cloaks to fantasy transportation and if you're at all familiar with the genre, you'll likely find plenty to amuse you.

As a night-time or once in awhile pick up and laugh sort of book, I'd definitely recommend this one for fantasy fans. I thoroughly enjoyed it as my "just before sleep" read to give me a light note to end the day with.
