A scientist reunites with her soldier ex-husband to combat a deadly plague in the New York Times bestselling author’s romantic adventure novella. Microbiologist Nora Medina knows something is wrong when she gets yanked off a Hawaiian beach and onto her ex-husband’s government jet. Her marriage to Deacan Devlin McDougall had taught her plenty about adrenaline, and something more than their unfinished business that has brought the maddeningly sexy Scot back into her life. As a soldier of fortune, Deke has seen just about everything. But the terrifying bacterium sneaking through the highest halls of power isn’t his kind of battle. All he can do is keep close to his brilliant, fiery ex-wife and fight like hell to keep her safe. Because if he lets her get sucked down by the horror that’s coming, he’ll never get another chance at her heart.

As an introduction to the Scorpius Syndrome series, I believe this story did its job. I’m very curious about the world I’ll be entering when getting into the first book of this series. Because the series deals with a virus of a sort, it did sometimes feel as if it was hitting a bit close to home while reading it in 2021. But not close enough that I didn’t still feel it was an escape from day-to-day life in the real world.

I’m a huge Rebecca Zanetti fan, mostly because her books are full of humor. Don’t get me wrong, I am also drawn to the amazing chemistry her characters always have and the fantastical adventures they experience. But the humor keeps me coming back for me. I found that lacking in this story. In general, I feel this author does a phenomenal job with her short stories and novellas. This one didn’t engage me quite the same way the short stories in her Dark Protectors series do.

That being said, I still really enjoyed this story. There was, as usual with this author, great chemistry. Plus, it’s a second chance romance which is always fun. Like I said, I’m looking forward to finding out what’s happening in this world now that Scorpius is widespread and on the loose.
